The Virgen de Candelaria is the patron saint of the whole Canary archipelago, and her August feast is the islands’ single biggest religious gathering. Through the night of 14 August tens of thousands of pilgrims walk to the seaside basilica, many setting off on foot from across Tenerife, for the masses and the re-enactment of the Guanche discovery of the image. Roads into Candelaria are heavily restricted that night — expect long queues and consider public transport.
