On the shortest night of the year, locals gather around bonfires on beaches island-wide to grill food, jump the flames and bathe in the sea at midnight for good luck. Puerto de la Cruz adds the unusual baño de las cabras, when herds of goats are led into the harbour waters at dawn in a centuries-old purification rite. Beaches and seafronts fill up early in the evening, so stake out a spot in good time.
